Find out the stories behind the SA athletes…
When I was a kid I never dreamt of being a professional athlete or Olympic champion, my parents hadn’t made sacrifices and struggled to bring us all over from Jamaica so I could spend my time running all day.
I was playing football in the school playground when my journey started, a teacher spotted me running after the ball and asked me to try out for the school team.
When I left school for college I had started training a little at the local track but spent more time socialising rather than taking training seriously. It wasn’t until I received two letters from my coach and the promoter of UK Athletics telling me to stop wasting my talent or call it a day that I put all my energy into training. The results from my new dedication and enthusiasm were dramatic but this didn’t mean life was easy. I had hardly any money and sometimes fell asleep in the snow in between training runs.
What I realised after I had stood on the podium with an Olympic Gold medal around my neck was that talent doesn’t get you anywhere without hard work and determination and nobody can give you that, you have to find it within yourself.
At the age of 12, I dreamt of going to an Olympic Games, but having grown up on a Council estate and with no father figure to guide me, who was I to have such a dream?
With help from my mother and other special people around me I was able to make my dream a reality. That’s what Street Athletics is about – giving you the opportunity to make your dreams come true.
Athletics has shown me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and Street Athletics will give you the opportunity to test yourself whilst having lots of fun. To me everyone who takes part will have taken that first step in achieving their dreams. Myself and Linford are committed to you and want to see you develop as young people, whether you become a musician, an Olympic Champion, or even a volunteer at the London Olympics in 2012.
We believe in you. It’s now time for you to believe in yourself!
